Japan's Kei Nishikori overcame Marin Cilic after a five-set quarterfinal thriller and his compatriot Naomi Osaka becomes first Japanese woman in 22 years to qualify for a grand slam semifinal after enjoying a comfortable 6-1 6-1 win over Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko.

Kei Nishikori held his nerve to battle past marin cilic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the semi finals.

The see-saw five set clash saw cilic take the first set and lead 4-2 in the second, before nishikori stepped up a gear to secure crucial breaks and take the second set. The third went to a tie-break which Nishikori emerged the victor from, before Cilic roared back into life to take the fourth.

With the match beyond four hours, Nishikori took an early break in the fifth set, only for cilic to break back. A series of missed forehands ended up being the difference for the croatian, as Nishikori broke to seal the match.
